2011 awards announced

The 2011 Get a Life Awards have been given to Debra Salem, Nuala Kennedy and Zoë Martlew.  More details of their projects as well as blogs coming soon.  A summary of what they’ll be up to:

Debra Salem’s current career is very much focussed on others.  As a Primary Music Specialist and vocal practitioner she works in schools and with a diverse range of vocal groups and community choirs.  Debra’s award will enable her to rekindle her own creative spark by allowing her to take time off to concentrate on her own compositions, with a view to recording them and touring with her band.  In addition, she will be furthering her skills as a workshop leader and vocal coach.

Nuala Kennedy’s sabbatical will be a pause in her successful performing and recording career as a traditional flute player and singer to give her time to study compositional and practical skills.  During her eight months in New York, she will immerse herself in the NY songwriting culture, as well as studying techniques of counterpoint and composition. Nuala is also keen to embrace the practical side of her craft and will be learning to make tin whistles with the acclaimed John Sindt.

A classically trained cellist, Zoë Martlew is stepping out of her behind her mainstream career to bring something unique to the music world.  Her one woman show was launched ten years ago to critical acclaim, but her busy freelance existence did not allow her further development in this direction; an increasingly frustrating situation which has culminated in Zoë’s need to harness her creative energies to her own performance art.   Over the next six months, she will be preparing new material and honing the skills necessary for ‘Revue Z’ and beyond.
